Feeling Festive

Top: Gap, Skirt: I made it!, Platforms: Steve Madden, Belt, Target, Necklace: ?(old), Watch: Citizen.

This is the nautical patterned skirt that I was working on last week. I promise I did iron the skirt before I left the house; apparently it got a little wrinkled from the car ride! The pattern and instructions can be found here. I finally finished it on Friday and decided to wear it out that night to my city's multicultural festival, Folklorama. According to wikipedia, Folklorama is the largest and longest running festival of its kind in the world! On this occasion, we decided to check out the Chilean pavilion. We had a fabulous time; the empanadas and pisco sours were tasty and I came home with a pair of gorgeous handmade earrings. Hopefully we can visit at least 1 or 2 other pavilions throughout the week!

I Want it Now!

It's official. I am in love with Topshop's blouses. Every since they started shipping to Canada earlier this year, they have been one of my favourite places to shop online. Lately I have been making my fall shopping list, and flowing blouses has been one of the items I have been looking for. From patterns to solids, Topshop has hit the mark on all of their blouses in my opinion. These are my favourites; now I am just trying to decide which ones I love the most before I place my order.

Which are your favourites?

Top Row:
Eyelet Scallop Pussybow Blouse, $90
Three Button Blouse, $65

Adventures of the Sewing Machine

Skirt: I made it!, Tank: Lululemon, Belt: Forever 21, Cardigan: Gap, Sandals: Frye, Sunglasses: RayBan, Necklace: ? (Old), Watch: Citizen.

Truthfully, not much planning went into this outfit. I had planned to wear this skirt and I happened to be wearing this tank while walking my dog earlier in the day, and it just seemed to work together. I threw on this wide belt and chunky necklace to complete the look.

On another note, I made this skirt on my sewing machine last summer. This skirt was the final product of the first adventure I had with my sewing machine, so I'm surprised and pleased that it turned into something that is actually wearable. I am working on a nautical patterned skirt now, so I will post pictures and the pattern I used for both skirts next week.

Romping Around

Romper: Forever 21, Clogs: Topshop, Purse: Vintage (thrifted), Belt: Forever 21, Sunglasses: RayBan, Necklace: Hilary Druxman.

I have decided that rompers are the absolute best in hot, humid weather. They are just so light, airy and keep you cool for hours. This floral romper from Forever 21 is no exception; I wore it all day yesterday and I didn't break a sweat in the 32 degree celsius weather. I ordered these clogs from Topshop over a month ago and was trying to wait for fall to wear them, but I couldn't resist putting them on yesterday after seeing so many bloggers wearing their clogs lately.

What are your go-to hot weather pieces?

Leek and Potato Soup

On the weekend I noticed that my tarragon was starting to take over my herb garden so I decided it was time to trim it down and find a recipe to make use of it. I went to my trusty Bon Appetit cookbook (I must admit that I often go to the internet for recipes, but there is just something fun about going old-school and using a cookbook and I feel confident knowing the recipes were tested and published), looked in the index and found several recipes that contained tarragon, but the one that caught my eye was the Leek and Potato soup.

I went to my local farmer's market Saturday morning and picked up some fresh leeks and red-skinned potatoes and went to town on the soup. I think it took me a total of 1/2 hour to make this including a quick trip to the store to pick up the whipping cream while the soup was simmering.

The flavour of the soup was incredible; we couldn't get enough of it this weekend. I will definitely make this soup again because it had everything I could have hoped for - it was inexpensive, quick and simple to make and relatively healthy (less than 200 calories per serving). If you want to mix up the recipe a bit you could use skim or 1% milk and it would be even lower in the calorie department or you could blend it in your food processor if you prefer a smooth soup. Here is the recipe:

Leek, Potato, and Tarragon Soup (from The Bon Appetit Cookbook)

Ingredients
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 2 cups chopped leeks (white and pale green parts only)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/2 pound red-skinned potatoes, unpeeled, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 4 cups low-salt chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 2 tsp chopped fresh tarragon
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
Melt butter in heavy large pot over medium heat. Add leeks, onion, garlic, and 2 tbsp water. Cook until leeks are golden, about 10 minutes. Add potatoes and broth; bring to boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 10 minutes. Mix in tarragon.

Stir in cream and yogurt into soup. Season soup to taste with salt and pepper.

Cooked and ready to add the cream and yogurt.

Voila- Ready to eat!

Mixing the Old and the New

Skirt: Forever 21, Top: Urban Outfitters (old), Belt: Winners, Shoes: Steve Madden "Melrow", Necklace: ? (old), Sunglasses: RayBan, Watch: Citizen.

I must admit, my closet is ready for a much needed cleaning and organizing session. Despite saying this, I have discovered a benefit to having a disorganized closet. It is so fun to 'find' clothes that you forgot you had; much like finding money in the pocket of your winter coat from the year before. I was rifling through my closet looking for a top that would look cute with this Forever 21 skirt, and I came across this cute top that I bought a few years ago which must have gotten buried in the back of my closet. I put it on and it was exactly what I wanted to go with the skirt. In the spirit of mixing the old with the new, I went through my closet and rediscovered this belt and necklace from several years ago. I guess sometimes it pays to keep the clothes you aren't sure if you will ever wear again!

Have you ever 'rediscovered' clothes you forgot you had?

Weekend Shots

Hopefully everyone is having a great weekend. It is currently pouring rain here and has been all morning so all of my outdoors plans for today are currently on hold. I thought I would take a minute to post some of photos I took this weekend so far. Tomorrow is a holiday for most of Canada so I hope the weather improves.

Thrifting finds. Biggest score: Vintage Ferragamo heels!

Sour cherries from my local farmer's market.

Homemade smoothies made with strawberries from my garden.

Hot yoga.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
